The astronaut Sunita Williams will attend a prayer meeting at Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram.
India is isolated in this geopolitics bacause Indian Polity is too busy to save the interests of Galaxy Post Modern Manusmriti order.
Ramsetu controversy also involves Srilanka. The very srilanka whaich was lit on fire by the Great hanuman and Conquered by God Ram to punish the Brahmin Raksas king Ravan for Kidnapping good Sita. it is the same Srilanka which is torn in civil war and rajiv Gandhi interfered in Jafna! Now neither the DMK ruling the state of Tamilnadu, nor the Government of India does care the srilancan version of the episode. This project whether violets or not the sanctity of God Ram, it surely violets srilanka`s freedom and sovereignty. Becuse the ram sdetu project endangers the very existence of Srilanka which is prone to Tsunami. The project disturbs the ecosyatem and marine life in srilankan Sea. But the Hindu Brigade neglects this vital environmental point and launches an Anti dramuk, anti Black Untouchable movement to polarise the Hindu Vote bank. Karunanidhi and the UPA government in centre oblige. As the Brahminical Hegemony is quite dependent on anti DMK sentiment,Islamophobia and intense dalit hatred.
Culture Minister Ambika Soni sounded despondent after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday to brief him about a government affidavit that has sparked a huge row by questioning the existence of Lord Ram.
"I have explained to the Prime Minister the course of events. I have submitted all the papers. He heard me patiently. I am content with the meeting," Soni told reporters after her nearly 30-minute talks at Singh's official residence here.
A day after the controversial affidavit on Ram Setu affidavit was filed in the Supreme Court, Culture Minister Ambika Soni got a call from an angry Congress President Sonia Gandhi and was reprimanded by her.

AFP reports from WASHINGTON: A court in Nebraska is being asked to cast judgement on the ultimate judge -- God.State lawmaker Ernie Chambers filed a lawsuit Friday against the Almighty -- acknowledging he/she goes by numerous aliases -- for causing "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues" and other alliterative catastrophes. The suit, Chambers vs God, asks the court for a "permanent injunction ordering defendant (God) to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terrorist threats" which affect innumerable persons, including Chambers's constituents. It asserts that God is "the admitted perpetrator" of such acts and said that God's omnipresence gives the local Douglas County District Court jurisdiction in the suit, adding that God's omniscience eliminates the need to issue a formal notice of the lawsuit.
Chambers told local media he filed the suit to make a point about frivolous lawsuits frequently seen in US courts, citing a recent one against a judge. He asked the court to award him an unspecified summary judgment against God, or, in the alternative, issue a permanent injunction against God engaging in the damaging acts cited in the filing.

In a significant change in the stand, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi today indicated that he would not mind if the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) was implemented without demolishing the controversial ''Ram Sethu''.
Talking to newspersons at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam here, after chairing a high-level party meeting, he said the SSCP, which was a 100 year old dream of the Tamils, should be implemented with or without demolishing ''Ram Sethu''.Asked whether it would be acceptable to him if the project was implemented without causing damage to ''Ram Sethu'', the Dravidian patriarch said ''it was never their stand that the bridge should be demolished,. and they only wanted the Sethusamudram project to be implemented''.
This was a 100 year old dream of the Tamils and the implementation of the project would bring prosperity, not only to Tamil Nadu, but the entire Southern states, he said.
Mr Karunanidhi said experts and economists have also opined that the project, once implemented would considerably reduce the shipping time, besides increasing the trade activity and bring prosperity.Turning down Bhratiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani's demand that he retract his remarks against Lord Ram and Ramayana, Mr Karunanidhi said he had only quoted saint Valmiki, the author of Ramayana, while making the remarks.
On Mr Advani taking exception to his questioning the existence of Lord Ram, saying that one could question the miracles of Jesus Christ and Moses, and not their existence, Mr Karunanidhi reiterated he had only quoted what Valimiki had said about Ram.
Lord Ram it seems is the chosen one for all controversies this season.

After the Sethusamudram project gave BJP a chance to attack the Centre for its controversial affidavit denying the existence of Ram, the party has come out with another venture in Madhya Pradesh called Rampath Project.

Under this, the state government will join the places in the state through which Lord Ram is believed to have carved his way down South

According to the Ramayan, while travelling towards the south, Ram passed through Satna, Mandla and Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh.

The state government has asked the archaeological department to gather concrete evidence on Ram's journey. It plans to transform the route Ram took into a religious site.
The war of words over the Ram Setu degenerated into a bitter slander match on Thursday with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi calling Lord Ram a ?drunkard? and a ?big lie?.

Karunanidhi reacted with these bitter words after senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani on Thursday asked him to withdraw his statement about Ram, saying ?people at the helm of affairs do not force contempt on others as far as religious affairs are concerned.?

?I want the Tamil Nadu CM to withdraw his statement about Ram. I respect Karunanidhi for being an atheist. But people at the helm of affairs do not force contempt on others as far as religious affairs are concerned,? Advani, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, said.

He pointed out that even the PM was upset about the Ram Setu controversy.

Karunanidhi shot back in no time, saying he remains firm on his stand. ?I will not withdraw my statement."
Ram is as big a lie as big as the truth of the existence of the Ganges and the Himalayas," he said. The TN Chief Minister even went on to call Lord Ram a 'drunkard'.

"Even Valmiki has said that Ram was a drunkard. I urge Advani to get into a debate with me after reading Valmiki's Ramayana," Karunanidhi said.

In the wake of the Ram Setu controversy, Karunanidhi had described Lord Ram as a ?mythical hero? and vowed to not go back on the Sethusamudram project.

?Is there any proof of Ram having built the bridge, or that he had the engineering expertise? There was no person in the name of Ram. The story of Ram is authored by Valmiki in Ramayana. There are so many things that Valmiki has said about Ram," Karunanidhi said.

On Tuesday evening, Karunanidhi daughter Selvi's house in Bangalore was attacked by unidentified miscreants in a development that was seen as a fallout of his comments. Karunanidhi slammed the attackers, saying "they showed the culture of Ram Bhaktas (worshippers). I treat these things like a speck of dust. I welcome such opposition.?

''The Ram Sevaks have proved their culture. I reiterate what I had said. There is no historical proof that Rama existed or of the bridge been built,'' he said.

Advani, who was at Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, described DMK as the second 'destabilising force' in the UPA Government after the Left, and alleged that the party was making its own interpretations and issuing statements on the 'Ram Setu.'

?After the Left, the DMK had become the second destabilizing force in the government,? he said and demanded Karunanidhi to withdraw his remarks on Lord Ram and the Ramayana.

He also urged the Centre to fix ministerial responsibility on those who filed the affidavit on Ram Sethu and appropriately penalise them.

Predicting mid-term elections in early 2008, Advani told a press conference that he foresaw a ?radical political change? in the country after the next General Elections.

"I am a loyal Congress worker and would abide by the decision of the party president," she said, when asked if she would put in her papers over the issue that has embarrassed the ruling party.

Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, who is also the Minister of State for Commerce, and R K Dhawan had suggested that Soni should step down over the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) affidavit. The ASI has since withdrawn the affidavit, and Ramesh has regretted his public remarks.
A visibly upset Soni maintained that she was not hurt by the attacks from within her party.
"There is no such thing (as feeling hurt) in politics. One has to learn and go ahead," she said, sounding despondent.
"I have been honest. But I realise that it is tough to be honest and it is not enough. You may have to do other things also," she said.
Although Soni had been trying to meet the Prime Minister for the last few days to explain her position, she could not do so as Manmohan Singh was advised rest after his prostate surgery last weekend.
The Minister had cancelled plans to attend the IncredibleIndia@60 festival in New York, pending the meeting with Manmohan Singh.
Soni, who expressed her willingness to quit over the row, had earlier met Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
The ASI functions under Soni's Ministry of Culture. The affidavit was filed to justify the government plan to build a canal in the sea dividing India and Sri Lanka.

Thousands of people from across the United States descended on a small town in central Louisiana on Thursday to protest what they say is injustice against six black teenagers charged over a high school fight.
Protesters arrived in buses and cars from cities as far away and apart as New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New Orleans for a rally in support of the "Jena 6."
The case has become a symbol for many African Americans of a wider struggle against racism and perceived discrimination against black males by the criminal justice system.
"I feel like it (injustice against blacks) has been happening for years and ... (the "Jena 6" incident) is just one of those things that gets national attention," said Esau Dorrough, a retailer who took two days off work and travelled nine hours by bus from Atlanta to attend the protest.
The case has its origins in an incident in August last year when three nooses were found hanging from a tree at the high school in the town of 3,000 northwest of New Orleans.
Black residents said that incident stoked tension in the town and in December the teenagers were charged with assault after a white schoolmate was beaten up.
Charges against some of the boys were later raised to attempted murder, drawing accusations from protesters that they had been excessively charged. Those charges have since been reduced.
For many blacks the "Jena 6" has attained the status of a modern-day version of the incidents that punctuated the U.S. civil rights movement in the 1960s.
Word about it has spread through the black community partly through syndicated radio shows by civil rights leader Al Sharpton and popular disc jockey Michael Baisden but the case has remained little known among the wider U.S. public.

France's lower house National Assembly adopted an immigration bill on Thursday containing plans to demand DNA tests from immigrants which have sparked opposition inside President Nicolas Sarkozy's government.Sarkozy, who made national identity a major theme of his presidential election campaign earlier this year, has promised to crack down on illegal immigration. But several members of his new government have criticised the new bill, which includes language tests for would-be immigrants and DNA tests to verify the ties between immigrants and relatives they want to bring to France. The left-wing opposition voted against the bill, which the Senate, the upper house, will debate next month. An amendment proposing the DNA tests passed easily, but
Ref: - Great implications of Ram Setu controversy on Babri Masjid dispute & on future of SAARC.- This time, Sangh Parivar should not be allowed to get away.-

    Tuesday September 18 2007 11:16:30 AM BDT

    Hem Raj Jain, India
When in late eighties Ram Janmbhoomi ? Babri Masjid (RJBM) dispute came to the fore, Hindus (motivated / persuaded also by their Saints) in great numbers joined this movement in favor of retrieving Babri Masjid site to built a Ram Mandir over there which is claimed to be the birth place of Lord Rama. Many Hindus in great numbers also joined Hindutva political parties BJP (a member of Sangh Parivar comprising RSS, Vishwa Hindu Parishad etc.) and Shiv Sena in order to contribute politically for the realization of this mission.
Without going in to the merit of sub-judice matter whether or not the Babri Masjid is - the birth place of Lord Rama / constructed over demolished Rama temple, this RJBM dispute powerfully struck a chord in most of the Hindus because Muslims (under their past invaders and rulers) have been widely portrayed in Hindu psyche as demolishers of large numbers of Hindu temples (including of Jains) and committers of huge violence and cruelty to Hindus.
This grudge of Hindus is further compounded by widely held Hindu belief that: -
(a)- Muslims were (as always, as per Hindu's belief) already on the run by the time of early eighteen century (end of Aurangzeb era) and but for the intervention of Britishers Hindus would have driven out most of the offending Muslims and their rulers from India.
(b)- The only mother land of Hindus (India) was partitioned in 1947 by Muslim.
Therefore also in view of the section 5 of The Places of Worship (Special Provision) Act 1991, where the status quo (as on August 15, 1947) of all religious places is to be maintained except of sub-judice RJBM, Hindus (including Jains) saw in RJBM dispute (and in Mandir movement) an opportunity to symbolically and non-violently take a revenge (retributive justice) against the said historic excesses of Muslims (by reconstructing Ram Mandir over there by getting Babri Masjid demolished through the due process of law).
In this Mandir movement it was given to understand that if judiciary does not grant Babri Masjid to Hindus for making Ram Mandir over there then Hindus would resort to legitimate political remedy of filling the jails in millions in order to secure (through Parliament) this relief (similarly as Gandhiji filled jails non-violently in order to secure India's independence from Britain).
Here it is in context to add that this non-violent approach was adopted also due the realization that the Muslims of contemporary India has nothing to do with the historical excess of Muslim rulers and invaders. Therefore symbolic revenge was considered to be enough to heal the deep emotional scars of Hindus inflicted by Muslims of yore.
It became increasingly clear by 2001 that judicial relief is not forthcoming at least in foreseeable future. Hence people of India [who brought Hindutva parties of NDA which were responsible for unethical demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 (triggering Mumbai riots & other riots 1992-93 and Mumbai blast 1993) in power at center on Mandir movement] stared pressurizing Hindutva parties for filling the jails in millions as envisaged & promised.
But Sangh Parivar being comfort loving and anti State declined to do so and instead started relying on illegal & unethical methods which not only did not bring any relief to the protagonists of Mandir movement but also culminated in Godhra carnage & Gujarat pogrom 2002 in which about hundred of innocent Hindus and thousands of innocent Muslims were killed. (Here it is in context to mention that whether a political party is pro or anti State is decided not so much by its behavior when it is in opposition but mainly when it is in power).
The amount of sufferings and dishonor undergone by the people (who got associated with this Mandir movement) due to this betrayal of Hindutva political parties (which shirked from non-violent political approach of filling the jails in millions) can be gauged by only those who have experienced it.
Therefore now in this Ram Setu controversy (where Supreme Court has granted three months time to Government of India to file fresh affidavit) and where Sangh Parivar is again whipping up the religious sentiments of Hindus, it should be ensured by people of India that: -
(1)- Sangh Parivar ask Hindus to apply at appropriate authority to claim Ram Setu as their religious place and Hindus should maintain and control it as such (in case this prayer is not granted then Sangh Parivar can fill up the jails in millions in order to get the intended relief from Parliament).
(2)- Without either Hindus getting Ram Setu as their religious place or Government of India declaring it as Protected & Ancient monument, Secular Indian State should not allow Hindu religious frenzy to dictate its decisions, conduct and behavior while deciding Setu Samudram project (navigation canal) between India and Sri Lanka.
Supreme Court of Hindu majority 'secular' India has already burnt its fingers in RJBM dispute where it's secular credentials is widely perceived to have been compromised seriously (whether, despite Article 141, 142 & 144 of The Constitution, it is the failure of restoration of status-quo-ante of Babri Masjid which was demolished in presence of Supreme Court's observer or partiality in favor of Hindus against Muslims in prosecuting accused of (post Babri Masjid demolition) Mumbai riots vis-?is Mumbai blast or inordinate delay in ensuring the judgment of the title suit in RJBM dispute or in punishing the accused of Babri Masjid demolition etc.)
Therefore in this Ram Setu controversy, which has great implications also on: -
    (i)- Sub-judice RJBM dispute.
(ii)- Future of "Federation / United States of Democratic Secular SAARC countries" which is bound to become a reality sooner than later in view of the great strategic interest being taken by powerful international community in South Asia in the back drop of - growing economic importance of this region, political problems / instability going on in most of the SAARC countries around India and unresolved Kashmir problem between contending nuclear powers.
    - It is leally expected that Supreme Court of India (which took suo-motto cognizance of widely televised mass agitation, led three months back by Gujjar community, demanding their reservation in Schedule Tribe category) will also take suo-motto cognizance of widely televised larger mass agitation led by Sangh Parivar on September 12, 2007 which was primarily meant to pressurize Indian State to jettison constitutionally mandated secularism and to acquiesce to communal pressures of Sangh Parivar.
    Yours truly

On India : Setu Samudram & Politics

A fter giving air to the issue Ram Janm Bhumi-Babri Masjid at Ayodhya & after demolishing that place forcibly on December 6, 1992, the rightist organizations got the power to rule in India once. Now again the parties known as rightist organizations are trying to give a colourful feeling to the issue of Setu Samudram. After being defeated in 2004 as the Indian voters didn't favour Ram Mandir issue, the right organization didn't have any sensitive issue to win the public opinion. Now the Bhartiya Janta Party & its associates, who were in search of a sensitive issue got a chance to raise the Setu Samudram issue. Surprisingly today these rightist parties who are opposing the India's UPA government of the centre & trying to prove it as anti-Hindu by opposing Setu Samudram project. In reality, the Bhartiya Janta Party along with the NDA was in power in the previous years, this project was recommended under the term of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. At that time these devotees of Lord Ram didn't raise a finger against it when their party was an associate of the government.
The sea that looks like a link bridge between India & Sri Lanka is 48 kilometers long & its geographical construction is somewhat strange. A lot of it is under deep water whereas some parts are under about 3 feet to 10 feet water. Some part is open where a person can have a walk. The scientists are of the view that this 48 kilometers long structure that looks like a link bridge is not a manmade structure. It is only a mixture of limestone & sand. It has come into existence by movements of the sea water. Under the Setu Samudram project, 300 meters wide & twelve meter deep part of it is to be cleared. The aim of this Setu Samudram project is to cut short the present long route of the ships that move between the East & West Coast of India. After completion of this project, the ship will be able to save 36 hours in their voyage time & their voyage will be 780 kilometers less. After the completion of this project, the distance will become short & fare will be less. The cargo will also reach the destination earlier by saving 36 hours. For these reasons the government is linking this project with the economic development of the country.
It is not so that all the results of this project are positive. Some of its results may be negative, as is being stated. It is said that if the depth of sea is increased at this place, there may be high tides in the sea & sea coasts may gradually erode. It is also feared that the fisher men will be in trouble in this area as the availability of the fishes in this area may decrease. Some experts are of the view that production of nuclear elements may be inversely affected. So some people are opposing this project because of its bad after effects. But Bhartiya Janta Party who previously gave recommendation for this project is at present opposing it only on the basis of sentiments. So these devotees of Lord Rama are of the view that this link bridge shouldn't be demolished because this is the bridge that was prepared by the Vanar Sena of Lord Rama. After crossing this bridge Lord Rama reached Lanka along with its army & got victory over Ravana. Now the question may arise why this project was cleared when there was rule of Vajpayee, if the faith of the people is so deep for this historical link bridge & the devotees don't want to harm this ancient bridge having so much religious & historical importance.
But the reference is that the archeological department of the Central government gave an affidavit in the Supreme Court in which it has denied the existence of Lord Rama & war between Rama & Ravana. This is strongly condemnable. In fact, the religious traditions of a religion can't be put on scientific arguments. Religions are completely based on faiths. These are so deeply based on faiths that blind faiths come out of it. The religious faith can't be confined in limits & it crosses all the limits & even it directly associates itself with the personal feelings of a person. So a person or an organization or a department has no right to hit the faith of a religion with its arguments. Especially in South Asian countries it needs special care on it where political organizations are ready to wait for such issues so that they could have an issue to propagate.
Anyhow the Indian archeological department has suspended its two officials for submitting this objectionable affidavit. These officials were responsible for giving & preparing this controversial affidavit. But instead of finishing the issue, it is being strongly propagated. The persons & organizations who had already recommended this project, are now trying to catch the power through this Setu. In 2004, they were looking at the slogan 'India Shining' because of these projects & these organizations were making the people 'Feel Good.' But now when this project is being given a constructive form by the National Development Policy, these people are obstructing it.
Certainly nobody is allowed to hurt the religious feeling of others & nobody should be allowed. If anybody tries, he should be punished. But nobody should be allowed to take benefit by inciting the people for its selfish motives. Nobody should be allowed to make ill use of the religious feelings. Lord Rama can't be limited to a political party because he is worshipped by most of the Indians. It is giving a wrong direction to the politics by polarization of votes on the basis of inciting the religious feelings of the people. Now the need is to be watchful on the issue of Setu Samudram & beware of the people who are misguiding in the name of religion.

Stop this slide into medieval barbarism, protest against BJP's blackmail
    by Asit Das
Every day our rulers and media moghuls bombard us with the news of the arrival of India as new economic powerhouse contributing to the global march towards high modernity. But let us look at the flip side of our great sub-continent with tall claims of a civilization thousands of years of old and as the guru of the world. Two hapless middle level bureaucrats of Archeological Survey of India have been suspended for stating the obvious that Rama is mythological character, not a historical character. And no modern government, it doesn't matter what is the religious of its majority population, has to go by professional advice based on scientific and rational inquiry. All of us know the difference between myth and reality.
A nation boasting of having third highest numbers of scientists and technicians in the world and our pride of providing highest number of software engineers to the Silicon Valley can't be blackmailed by medieval religious bigots and especially the fascist Hindu Sangh Parivar to take the entire nation for a ride for its retrograde, regressive, obscurantist and fascist designs. This applies both to the Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists. Both Hindu and Muslim Talibanism are the two sides of the same coin. They are basically anti-women, anti-dalit and are poised to roll back all the democratic achievements after centuries of struggle, including the lofty ideals of the French Revolution and the big claims of the Indian Constitution.
Whatever happened since past few months shocks every rational, democratic mindset. Some religious leaders attacked Taslima Nasrin and later pass a fatwa to kill her. A group of mad Muslim clerics pass a fatwa that girls and boys cannot sit together in the same bench in the Kerala schools. Every month the newspapers report us a dalit woman is being paraded naked, jati panchayats punishing couples, no right thinking person can forget the Roshani incident two years ago. Eve teasing, bride burning and rapes are an every day experience of Indian women. So much to say for our great Indian civilization, much trumpeted by the Sangh Parivar.
We are yet to recoil from the gory days of NDA government's experimentation with education, saffronizing the text books and introducing stupid irrational subjects like Vedic Mathematics and astrology. What happened in the Rama Setu incident is quite medieval obscurantism. Even the NASA pictures and studies by the colonial government enshrined in the Gazetteers clearly say that the so-called Rama Setu is a natural coral reef. Any modern government should respect this fact. Thee sheer capitulation of Congress-led UPA government shows the dual character of the Congress party. We should not forget that it is the same Congress under Rajiv Gandhi's leadership passed the Muslim women's bill in the wake of the Shahbano controversy to appease the Muslim fundamentalists with the greedy eye on the Muslim vote bank. Thus sealing the fate of the democratic aspirations of Muslim women and their struggle for equal rights. They opened the Babri Masjid doors and provided an issue to BJP on a platter. Congress party's soft communalism gives BJP a bigger weapon to communalise the country and implement their fascist design.
We appeal to all the democratic and progressive organizations and individuals to demand the revocation of the two ASI officials and pressurise the government of India not to pamper to communal outfits and Hindu and Musl

Left to govt: Do not succumb to US pressure. With chances of mid-term general election looming large the Left Front has decided to use the price rise as a weapon to assail the government. The government has not paused its efforts to conclude the next steps to bring the Indo-US civil nuclear deal to fruition as soon as possible. With the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) likely to meet in Vienna Thursday to discuss the India-US civil nuclear deal, the government appears ready to take forward negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) next month despite the Left's warnings not to continue with it. On the other hand,Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today announced several agitational programmes from September 25 to protest alleged police atrocity and torture on women in collusion with ruling CPI(M) supporters in West Bengal. Suffocating heat and humidity persisted in the city today while the suburbs were also not getting any respite from it. The West Bengal Congress, Committee (WBCC) today asked the ruling front whether it had informed the Centre that the setting up of a chemical hub at Nandigram had been cancelled. Meanwhile, Amid noisy scenes over ISRO land deal, the Kerala Assembly was adjourned sine-die today after Speaker K Radhakrishnan rushed through the scheduled business. Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today alleged that the Congress-led Opposition had launched the agitations, over the ISRO land deal, foreseeing an immediate mid-term poll in the changing political scenario.
West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has struck yet another divergent note from his party, CPM — he has clarified in an interview to a Kolkata daily. the most circulated one, an ABP publication Anand Bazar Patrika, he doesn't believe in "blind anti-Americanism". He added: "With time, we change our thinking. And when change is good for the people, why shouldn't we, too, change?" Mind you, ABP group is trying its best to divide the CPIM on Nuclear Deal presenting Buddha, an icon devoted to save the interests of West Bengal and painting Prakash Karat and his wife Brinda Karat as Conservative anti Bengali leaders who denied first Jyoti Basu the Prime minister and then Somnath Chatterjee, the President of India. ABP with all its media hands electronic as well as Print justify Buddha`s proUS stance in the best interest of the state. This group provides no space for subaltern or triabal or Dalit or Muslim causes. It launches Pranab Mukherjee as a Prime mininister prospect and hails the intimacy between Buddha and Manmohan. While it despises Marxism as an ideology and marxists as politicians with the Indian Left as much as the Hell!
Bhattacharjee's non-offensive comments on the US comes soon after his endorsement of nuclear power and in the backdrop of CPM's fierce opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal as well as the very need for nuclear power. Given this context, the statements are being viewed as significant by Left analysts who are reading a divergence between the CPM leadership in Delhi and that in Kolkata. Buddha's statement came soon after he disclosed that state industry minister Nirupam Sen is going to the US to lobby for American investments in West Bengal. In fact, Sen's visit may be followed up by a visit to America by the CM himself. Although this does not constitute a direct contradiction of the Delhi leadership's position, it does show a much more accommodating view of the US and Amercian interests. He has also indicated quite clearly that the economic development of West Bengal was dearer to him that ideological point-scoring on "US imperialism".
"We are hopeful of concluding negotiations with the IAEA next month," a reliable source privy to those involved in nuclear negotiations told IANS.
There are political considerations. But we will go ahead," the source added on a day the government and the Left parties held their second meeting to address issues relating to the implications of the 123 bilateral civil nuclear agreement on India's foreign policy and its energy programme.
The external affairs ministry chose not to comment on the status of India's negotiations with the IAEA. "I have nothing to say on that," spokesperson Navtej Sarna said.
    K. Subrahmanyam, who heads a task force appointed by the government to review India's nuclear policy, said: "India has only one step to take, that is, to complete its negotiations with the IAEA. This will be done next month. We have time on hand to complete the deal.
"The US has called a meeting of the NSG on the sidelines of IAEA in Vienna on Friday. They will hold preliminary discussions on the nuclear deal. It's for the US to persuade the NSG for rules change in favour of India," he said.
Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar is in Vienna to attend a meeting of the IAEA, of which India is a member. He has tactfully kept quiet on when New Delhi will begin negotiations with the UN nuclear watchdog to place its civilian nuclear reactors under India-specific safeguards.
Torrential rains and thunderstorms have killed at least 63 people in southern India, and flooded dozens of villages. Worst hit was the state of Andhra Pradesh where 48 people died over the last four days.

Terrorists prefer the sea route into India
    Brijesh Pandey / CNN-IBN
The tried and tested routes for infiltration are now no longer viable. Increased vigil by security forces is now resulting in heavy losses for terrorist organisations. This is now forcing terror outfits like the Lashkar-e-Toiba to explore new routes — the most preferred being the sea route. Intelligence agencies are also waking up to the sea route, all the way from Pakistan to Sri Lanka to the beaches of Chennai

The Congress today gave it in writing to Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee that it had no objection to Nayachar if geology and environment experts gave the go-ahead to the chemical hub. After a party meeting today, state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacharya said: “We are of the opinion that the interests of farmers need to be protected when land is acquired for a project. From that point of view, Nayachar is a suitable place if Geological Survey and environment experts give the green signal.”The island off Haldia belongs to the government and there is no question of having to acquire land for the project. The Congress had attended the September 3 all-party meeting to discuss the hub and promised to let the government know its stand soon.
Meanwhile, The warning of a March 14-like resistance to police was rung in Nandigram after 200 jawans staged a flag march this afternoon. The exchange of fire and bombs between Bhoomi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee and CPM supporters yesterday and inputs that Maoists have sneaked into the area apparently prompted the march along an 18-km stretch from Reyapara to Tekhali.East Midnapore police chief G.A. Srinivas declined comment on the Maoists. “We decided on the vigil to ensure peace.”As 26 vehicles with armed personnel snaked through, the committee leaders went into a huddle. Trinamul Congress MLA Subhendu Adhikary attended the meeting.
President George W. Bush's administration Wednesday thwarted the latest bid by Democrats to derail its Iraq strategy, as the Senate blocked a bid to limit the numbers of troops ready for deployment. The bill's 56-vote tally was exactly the same as the number a similar version garnered in June, when it last came up for the vote, showing little progress by Democrats in thwarting Bush's war strategy. After wavering Republican Senators came under fierce political pressure, the bill garnered 56 votes in the 100-member chamber, but in a stinging defeat for Democrats, fell four votes short of the required 60-vote supermajority. The measure, framed by Democratic Senator James Webb, and co-sponsored by Republican war critic Senator Chuck Hagel, would have mandated rest periods for troops equal to the length of time they spent on combat tours. Its failure was the latest bitter disappointment for Democrats who grabbed control of Congress last year, but have repeatedly failed to change the course of US strategy in the unpopular war.But critics branded the bill a "back-door" attempt to enforce a drawdown of US troops from Iraq. Supporters did not dispute the fact it would limit troop levels, but said it was vital to ease the strain on the US military.Though Secretary of Defense Robert Gates had warned he would ask Bush to veto the measure had it passed, the bill was seen as the Democrats best shot this year of challenging Bush's control of the war.Republicans celebrated the defeat of the bill, which they said would have amounted to a legislated surrender in Iraq, a week after Bush declared his troop surge strategy a success.Senator and 2008 presidential candidate John McCain branded the bill "dangerous," adding it would have "the effect of changing policy on the war."
Faced with apparently solid Republican backing for Bush on the war in the Senate, Democrats are now expected to make several symbolic -- but almost certain to fail -- attempts to establish troop withdrawal timetables.By the Democratic script, September was supposed to have been the month, when constant pressure on wavering Republican senators broke the back of Bush's support for the war in Congress. But a public relations campaign by the White House, and testimony by war commander General David Petraeus and US ambassador to Baghdad Ryan Crocker now seems to have been decisive.
Hagel had argued in a day of impassioned debate that US troops were being stretched beyond endurance, and facing rising rates of stress, divorce and personal hardship by repeated combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"We cannot continue to look at war and the people who fight and die in wars as abstractions, as pawns, as objects," said Hagel.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged Israelis and Palestinians on Thursday to hold serious talks on creating a Palestinian state, insisting a looming peace summit be substantive.
US President George W. Bush announced Thursday that his agriculture secretary had resigned, and urged him to defend a vulnerable Senate seat held by his Republican party come the 2008 elections.Bush endorsed outgoing secretary Mike Johanns to replace Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, a sometimes critic of the White House on issues like Iraq, who has announced he will step down.
President George W. Bush said Thursday he was "optimistic" about the prospects for the US economy, despite acknowledging it "unsettling" times in the housing market.
"I'm optimistic about our economy," Bush said when asked in a White House news conference about predictions from some analysts for a recession. But he added: "there is no question" that Americans were experiencing "unsettling times in the housing market."
US President George W. Bush said Thursday the United States favored using diplomatic means to resolve the crisis over Iran's nuclear program, amid speculation of possible military action.
"I have consistently stated that I am hopeful that we can convince the Iranian regime to give up any ambitions it has in developing a weapons program, and do so peacefully," Bush told reporters. "That ought to be the objective of any diplomacy."He was responding to a question about comments by France foreign minister Bernard Kouchner, who caused a diplomatic storm by warning this week of the possibility of a war with Iran over the nuclear dispute.
Iran is enriching uranium that world powers are concerned could be used to make a nuclear warhead. It insists the activity is aimed only at producing power for civilian purposes.
The UN Security Council has already adopted three resolutions against Iran, two of them including sanctions for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment. The United States is to host several key powers in Washington on Friday to discuss possible new sanctions.
"We are working with allies and friends to send a consistent message to the Iranians that there is a better way forward for them than isolation," Bush said Thursday.
"We'll keep the pressure on them, and the objective of course, is to solve this peacefully," he said.

New Delhi: Left parties on Thursday asked the government to consider the "grave consequences" of US "pressures" to change India's policy direction on various fronts before operationalising the Indo-US nuclear deal.

"These instances of reconfirmation of the concerns expressed by us on the grave consequences to India's sovereignty by this deal must be considered in right earnest by the UPA government before it proceeds to operationalise it," CPM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said.
Quoting the statements of US ambassador David Mulford and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher about rushing up the operationalisation of the 123 Agreement, both Yechury and the CPI asked the government not to succumb to American "pressures" and put the deal on hold.

Observing that Boucher wanted India not to overlook the political timetable and asked the government to come clean on Iran, Yechury said this was precisely what the Left had been saying all along.
"It is such arm twisting of India to change the direction of its policy that will increase as the nuclear deal anchored within the Hyde Act gets implemented," the CPM leader said in an editorial in the forthcoming issue of People's Democracy.
"Such pressures will not be confined to foreign policy positions alone. It will extend to vital areas such as defence cooperation, security and intelligence collaboration etc.," Yechury said.
In a statement, the CPI Central Secretariat said: "Those in India who defend 123 Agreement should now understand the impact of Hyde Act and US efforts to drag India into its global strategy."

MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) - JP Morgan said it viewed India as 'underweight' citing rising political instability, relatively inflexible monetary policy and unrealistic corporate earnings expectations.
Adrian Mowat, chief Asian & emerging markets strategist at JP Morgan said the standoff between the Congress-led government and its Left party allies over the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal could lead to to mid-term elections as early as end 2007.
This political uncertainty could also negatively impact equities and the Indian rupee, Mowat said.
On the Indian economy, Mowat said India's monetary policy was less attractive than the other emerging markets. "Notwithstanding a persistent decline in the country's whole price index, the central bank still looks concerned about inflation," he said.
The prevailing higher rates have already started adversely impacting India's industrial output. Industrial data from the statistics bureau showed that July industrial production growth -- at 7.1 pct -- grew by its slowest pace in nine months.
JP Morgan said the country's overall economic growth could be impacted if the Reserve Bank of India continues its a hawkish stance on interest rates.
But said with sufficient infrastructure and focus India's growth can outpace that of China.
JP Morgan also considers the projected corporate earnings of Indian companies as inflated and unrealistic. Mowat said currency gains, owing to the rupee's record rise this year, formed an important portion of the earnings reported by the Indian corporates in the last quarter. So, if the rupee depreciates following a weakness in the global economy, the corporate earnings will also take a hit. "The market has still not in factored in this element. The earnings expectations need to be brought down to realistic levels," Mowat cautioned.
Though the Indian equities have managed to recover the losses they suffered from of US sub-prime mortgage crisis, JP Morgan sees the stock markets declining over the next two months. But it does not forecast a steep fall.
JP Morgan was bullish on the country's engineering & construction sector. "Though the valuations of some the companies in the sector are steep, it continues to be a long-term story," Mowat said.
He added the companies in the sector have got a strong order book, due to developed and developing economies' excessive focus on building infrastructure.
Mowat also sounded positive about the steel companies and said he foresaw the demand for steel to rising further, given the global spending on building physical infrastructure.
However, he did not have an encouraging forecast for the Indian software companies, which were already feeling the pinch of a strong rupee, owing to their exposure to the US economy.
"Since Indian IT companies have a great exposure to the US markets, any recession in the US economy will negatively impact the demand for these companies," Mowat said.
He also sounded caution on the Indian auto sector citing the prevailing higher interest rates.

Bin Laden urges Pakistanis to revolt

Cairo: Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden called on Pakistanis to rebel against President Pervez Musharraf in a new recording released on Thursday, saying his military's siege of a militant mosque stronghold makes him an infidel.
The storming of the Red Mosque in Islamabad in July "demonstrated Musharraf's insistence on continuing his loyalty, submissiveness and aid to America against the Muslims ... and makes armed rebellion against him and removing him obligatory," bin Laden said in the message.
Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has vowed to retaliate against "infidel" Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for the killing of a rebel cleric and a raid on his mosque in July, U.S. Web sites said on Thursday.
Al Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri called on Muslims to fight the United States and its allies around the world and praised the operations of Islamist militants in a new video released on Thursday.Separately, an Islamist Web site said it would carry a new video from al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in which he declares war on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Pakistan's army. It gave no details and the footage was not available immediately on the site that carried the news.In a video made to mark the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Zawahri said: "Stand, o nation of Islam under the victorious banner of the Prophet ... and campaign against the crusader banner of (U.S. President George W.) Bush.
"Go forth ... to the mujahideen, bear them arms, back them, defend them and don't be intimidated by the power of America for these two blessed attacks have revealed that it is a power of iron and fire, with no faith or morals or principle."
Zawahri, who praised the actions of al Qaeda-linked groups fighting in Afghanistan, north Africa, Somalia, Chechnya and Iraq, called on Pakistanis to avenge the killing of a rebel cleric sympathetic to Afghanistan's Taliban in July.
"Let the Pakistani army know that the killing of Abdul Rashid Ghazi and his students and the demolition of his mosque and two madrasas have soaked the history of the Pakistani army in shame ... which can only be washed away by retaliation against the killers of Abdul Rashid Ghazi and his students."
"We in al Qaeda organisation call on God to witness that we will retaliate for the blood of ... Abdul Rashid Ghazi and those with him against Musharraf and those who help him, and for all the pure and innocent blood," lauramansfield.com, which monitors Islamist Web sites, quoted bin Laden as saying in English excerpts of his comments.
"So Pervez, his ministers, his soldiers and those who help him are all accomplices in spilling the blood of those of the Muslims who have been killed. He who helps him knowingly and willingly is an infidel like him," bin Laden was quoted as saying on another U.S. monitoring Web site, siteinstitute.org.
Neither site posted a full transcript of his comments. Al Qaeda-linked Web sites had earlier announced the Saudi-born militant would declare war on Musharraf and the Pakistani army.
More than 100 of Ghazi's followers were killed in an assault on the Lal Masjid, a mosque and school complex. The group is sympathetic to the Taliban, who were removed from power in Afghanistan by U.S.-led forces.
Earlier on Thursday, al Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri called on Muslims to fight the United States and its allies around the world, and praised the operations of Islamist militants in a new video. In the video made to mark the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Zawahri said: "Stand, o nation of Islam, under the victorious banner of the Prophet ... and campaign against the crusader banner of (U.S. President George W.) Bush.Zawahri, who praised the actions of al Qaeda-linked groups fighting in Afghanistan, north Africa, Somalia, Chechnya and Iraq, also called on Pakistanis to avenge the killing of Ghazi.
    THIRD TAPE
Zawahri also called on Muslims in Sudan to fight a force of African Union and U.N. peacekeepers set to deploy to the volatile Western region of Darfur. He said Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir had abandoned his Muslim brothers and no longer deserved their protection.Bin Laden and Zawahri are believed to be hiding in the border area of Afghanistan and Pakistan, a mountainous, inaccessible region that U.S. intelligence has described as a safe haven for al Qaeda and their Taliban allies. The latest audiotape was the third posting featuring a new message from bin Laden to appear this month. The messages, issued by al Qaeda's media arm As-Sahab, were timed to mark the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington in which almost 3,000 people were killed.
Bin Laden appeared in a video on September 7 in which he said the United States was vulnerable despite its power and said only conversion to Islam would end the conflict. In an audio tape issued on September 11, bin Laden praised what he called the "19 champions" who carried out the attacks and eulogised one hijacker, who presented his last testament.
The latest Zawahri tape is an 80-minute compilation including old audio clips from bin Laden, comments by Qaeda fighters and clips of Western analysts and officials. Zawahri gives what appears to be a new commentary, explaining how the United States was being defeated by Muslims around the world.
"What they claim is the strongest power in the history of mankind is today being defeated in front of the Muslim vanguard of jihad six years after New York and Washington," said Zawahri, who was wearing a white turban and speaking in front of a packed bookcase. An assault rifle leant against it.
"The coalition of the crusaders has begun to fight the fight of the desperate ... by increasing its bombing of civilians to discourage them from supporting the Taliban..."
The video begins with footage of a cockpit and what analysts said was old audio tape of Mohammed Atta, a leader of the September 11 hijackers, talking to passengers aboard the doomed plane.
"So when the capability is there, it is obligatory to rebel against the apostate ruler, as is the case now," he said, according to a transcript released by Laura Mansfield, a US terrorism expert who monitors militant message traffic.
Bin Laden's voice was heard over a video showing previously released footage of the terror leader. It was posted on Thursday on Islamic militant websites.
Maj Gen Waheed Arshad, a Pakistani army spokesman, said the army would continue its fight against terrorism, regardless of any threats it faces.
"We have the aim and objective, as our national duty, to eliminate terrorists and eradicate extremism. The Pakistan army will continue to carry out its role against terrorists wherever they are found, whether in the tribal areas (of northwest Pakistan) or elsewhere."
"Such threats issued through videos or in any other way cannot deter us from fulfilling our national duty," he said.

Myanmar monks escalate pressure on junta

More than 1,300 Buddhist monks marched in Yangon on Thursday, their largest demonstration in Myanmar's main city against the junta since they launched a protest movement in force earlier this week.Witnesses said several thousand onlookers watched the monks marching in the rain and praying in three separate rallies, in what a Western diplomat said marked an escalation of pressure on the military regime.Thursday marked the fourth consecutive day of protests by monks in Myanmar and, for the first time, onlookers outnumbered the clergy.
    Global hegemony and Bangladesh

'Would you please tell me, which way I ought to go from here?'
'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to?'
Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland
WE are living in a world that has entered into a reproductive system of war, militarisation, destruction and dehumanisation. For different reasons, the United States has emerged as the centre of this global system. The survival of the US as a superpower, expansion of its imperial hegemony and the function of crisis-ridden global capitalism now depend highly on its war machine and militarism on the one hand and speculative activities on the other. All sorts of criminal activities go with that.
David Korten, a former senior advisor to USAID, described only part of the scenario when he said: 'The world is now ruled by a global financial casino staffed by faceless bankers and hedge-fund speculators who operate with a hard mentality in the shadowy world of global finance. Each day, they move more than 2 trillion dollars around the world in search of quick profits and safe harems, sending exchange rates and stock market into will gyratium wholly.'
We are living in a world where $9 billion is adequate to ensure safe water for everybody in the world but where millions die every year because of unclean water. The same world spends more than $900 billion on war and armaments every year, i.e. hundred times the money required to create a safe world; share of the US in these destructive expenditure is more than 60 per cent.
Therefore, we have a world, we have a 'knowledge-based society', we have a 'free democratic' civilisation where regimes like the Bush administration can spend unlimited resources for destruction, genocide, occupation and create a real hell on earth.
To make the point clear, this is not the Bush administration per se but the global system we live in that creates and recreates faceless heartless robotic efficient inhumans in civil military administrations, parliaments, business, think-tanks, banks, religious guilds and all centres of power. We are living in a world where the global system everyday brings more destruction for its own survival and consequently invites destruction of the whole civilisation.
We are now living in a world where we find growing resources but increasing deprivation, expanding communication but intensifying conflicts, generating knowledge but monopolising power, growing potential but deepening discrimination. Globally we have autocracy and militocracy in the name of democracy where peace means war, love means hate, freedom means occupation, security means genocide. The United States, the centre of global power, is crying for its own security and to ensure that, or as an excuse, is creating insecurity all over the world as well as for its own people. Its cry for security is actually madness for profit and domination for few.
    Blood for oil and gas
Millions of people have been raising slogans against war since 1991, and called for 'no blood for oil', still oil and natural resources have become the focal point of military actions led by the US. Communal, racial hatred and urge for global hegemony go with that.
Kretzmann (2003) correctly observes that 'there is a striking correlation betw
